If you're new to cigars, the experience can feel intimidating at first. Unlike cigarettes, cigars are meant to be enjoyed slowly and appreciated for their flavor and craftsmanship.
Here’s how to get started.
Step 1: Choose a Mild Cigar
Beginners should start with mild to medium-bodied cigars. These are smoother and easier on the palate.
Look for cigars with:
• Connecticut wrappers
• Dominican tobacco
• Smooth creamy profiles
Step 2: Cut the Cigar Properly
Before lighting, the cap of the cigar must be cut.
Common cutting methods include:
• Straight cut
• V-cut
• Punch cut
A clean cut allows proper airflow and an even draw.
Step 3: Toast and Light
Instead of lighting directly, toast the foot of the cigar first. Slowly rotate the cigar near the flame to evenly heat the tobacco.
Then take gentle draws while lighting.
Step 4: Smoke Slowly
Cigars are meant to be savored. Take a puff every 30–60 seconds to avoid overheating the cigar.
With time and experience, you'll begin recognizing different flavors and aromas.
